Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover by John Limjoco

Billions of people in the world

Each one of us has our own problems

Not a single person has time

Time to be judged by the way that they look

How tall they are, or how much they weigh

But there is always time for people to see the true colors in others

Instead of focusing on looks, weight, or height

Maybe, just maybe, people should focus on the way people act

The way others treat others, and the way people interact with others

And maybe, just maybe

The world in which we live in will be a world filled with kindness and happiness

Instead of the hate in which many people suffer from

Why I Think Teenagers Over The Age Of 13 Should be Allowed to See “R” Rated Movies

Have you ever seen a trailer to an R rated movie that you would like to see?  If you were 13 years old, you could not see that movie.  Many people think you should not let teens over 13 see R rated movies, but  I think that teens over 13 years old should be able to view R rated movies.  You should let teens over 13 years old see R rated movies because they are almost adults.  Also,  movie theaters will make more money.  The more money movie theaters make, the nicer movie theaters could look.  Finally,  R rated movies may make teens over 13 years old have a stronger bond with their parents or adult relatives.  Those are the three reasons I think that teens over 13 years of age should be able to view an R rated movie.

One of the reasons why teens over 13 should be able to view an R rated movie is because they are almost adults.  I think teens over 13 should start having some adult privileges.  Many people may think that they are too young, but I think that teen years are when kids start to grow-up: physically and mentally.  I think the movies teens over 13 see should be more mature.  There is too much drama in the teen movies, and I think that teens should start watching movies with less drama.  They have to start watching movies that are more serious.  Teen drama and adult drama movies are very different.  Teen drama is not that serious while adult drama has more to do with the real world.  I think as teens get over the age of 13 they should start being treated a little more like adults too.  Having teens over 13 watching R rated movies isn’t just good for the teens but it’s also good for the movie theaters too.

Teens over 13 years should be able to watch an R rated movie not just because they are almost adults, but having teens over 13 watch R rated movies will benefit movie theaters too. By allowing teens over 13 to watch R rated movies, more people will be watching more movies.  More movies being watched means more customers, and more customers mean more income.  The benefit that movie theaters will have if teens over 13 were able to watch R rated movies is there will be more movies being viewed because there is a wider range of movies to see.  I think movie theaters will gain more income, and they can start improving the movie theaters.  They can put nicer seats inside, and they could have better food. Even after good movies come out people would still want to come to the movie theater because it is nice.  Luxury on the inside can go a long way.  Therefore, teens over 13 should be able to watch R rated movies because it helps movie theaters out.  I think movie theaters also make people have stronger bonds.

Teens over should be able to watch R rated movies because they are almost adults, it will benefit movie theaters, and I think teens would be able to talk to the adults more often.  As they are starting to grow into adults, teens start to separate themselves from their parents.  A parent to child relationship is good to have.  Maybe, if teens over 13 started to see R rated movies they could start talking to their parents or older relatives about the movie.  I don’t think adults are too thrilled to talk about The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.  I don’t think they would know what happens.  I think that letting teens over 13 watch R rated movies will give them something to talk about with their parents or older relatives.  Parents and older relatives would be happy to have something to talk about with their teen that is starting to grow independent.

There are many good movies out there that a lot of teens can’t see.  If that changes there will be many benefits.  For example, teens will have more movies to watch.  Also, movie theaters will make more money, and hopefully improve themselves.  Most importantly this may make stronger relationships with teens, parents, and older relatives.  Therefore, teens over the age of 13 should be able to view R rated movies.

Thank you for taking time to read my opinion on teenagers watching “R” rated movies.

Bone Cancer

Cancer is a serious disease that many people suffer and die from.  Cancer is when cells start growing uncontrollably.  There are more than 100 types of cancer.  The cancer I am going to talk about is bone cancer.  I am going to talk about bone cancer because I think that bones are important to humans because bones keep our body in shape.  Without bones we would not be able to stand.  Bones make activities possible to do.  Our bones are like the frame of our bodies.  We need bones to do physical actions.  For example, cooking. Without bones we wouldn’t be able to cook when we are hungry.  What if you want to get a drink of water?  You need bones to walk to get the water.  You need bones to move your arm. Therefore, bones play an important part in our lives.

Doctors don’t really know what causes cancer.  Many bad health habits can trigger cancer.  Doctors don’t really know what causes bone cancer.  All they know is that bone cancer is an error in a cell’s DNA.  The error tells the cell to grow or divide uncontrollably.  Bone cancer starts like many types of other cancer.  They start off with a tumor and start to spread throughout the bone.

Some symptoms of bone cancer are bone pain, swelling and softness near the area where bone cancer is, and broken bones.  Bone cancer can affect the body by making you lose weight mysteriously and getting you fatigued.  If you experience any of these symptoms you should see a doctor immediately.  Bone cancer is an uncommon cancer, but it is still a dangerous cancer.  You should always see a doctor when you experiencing any of the symptoms.  Not all symptoms connect to bone cancer. For example, when you get fatigued.  That doesn’t mean you have bone cancer.  You could just be fatigued because you had a long day.  You should be aware of what is happening in your body.

There are three ways that doctors treat bone cancer.  They can perform surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or combined treatments.  Surgery is supposed to get rid of the whole bone cancer.  For large bone cancers or bone cancers that are in a difficult point on the bone they have to perform an amputation.  If the bone cancer can be removed from nerves and other tissue, the surgeon might be able to remove the cancer while saving the limb.  If the bone cancer occurs anywhere else except for the arms and the legs, the surgeon may remove the bone and some surrounding tissue.  They will replace the bone they removed with another bone from another area of your body or they will use a metal bone.  Radiation therapy is when doctors use high powered beams of energy to kill the bone cancer cells.

Chemotherapy is when they give you drugs that uses chemicals to kill the cancer through the veins.  Sometimes all of those treatments are combined.  For example,  chemotherapy is combined with radiation to make the bone smaller, so the surgeon does not have to cut your limb off.  These treatments are decided by  type of cancer you have, the stage of the cancer, your health and what you prefer.  There aren’t as many cancer treatments,  but I think the will find new ways to deal with cancer in the future.

While researching about bone cancer I learned some interesting facts.  For example, radiation therapy increases the risk of bone cancer.  Radiation therapy may help treat bone cancer, but it will also increase the risk of bone cancer.  Also,  bone cancer is very rare.  It is only found in less than 0.2% of  patients.  The last thing I learned was that people with primary bone cancer have a little over 50% survival rate.  Bone cancer is very rare, but it is threatening and not easy to treat.

Cancer is a disease that a lot of people get.  Some aren’t as dangerous as others.  Some are more common than others.  There are a wide variety of cancers, but there are only a few treatments.  Bone cancer is a rare and dangerous cancer, but it can be treated.  Hopefully in the future cancer won’t be such a big problem.

Human Evolution

We humans are very sophisticated species, but we did not become this way out of nowhere.  We evolved over many many years.  Evolution is the process in which species’ bodies change according to their surroundings.  A species’ body structure can change due to evolution.  Also,  they can get smarter.  For example, we humans got more intelligent over time.  Our bodies have changed many times throughout many years.

Our first ancestors roamed the Earth millions of years ago.  Our first ancestors were apes. They roamed the Earth on four legs, but they soon roamed around on two legs.  We all started to form in Africa, and most of our evolution happened in Africa.  About  3.5 million years ago our ape-like ancestors began to walk on two feet, instead of four feet.  This was caused because of environmental changes.  The environment changed when the country, India, collided with the continent, Asia.  This event then caused the mountain range that is known as the Himalayas to form.  When the Himalayas formed this caused a monsoon to occur.  The monsoon made the air dry.  This same air that was dry then traveled across East Africa, where our ancestors lived, and caused the rain to dramatically decrease compared to previous years.  This land then transformed from a rain forest to a Savannah.  This caused our ancestors to start walking on two legs instead of four.  They realized that they could see better by standing, and by walking on two feet they were saving energy.  They can’t be wasting energy in this period of time in the African Savannah.  Conserving energy at this time is very critical for them.

About two million years ago more species of ape-man existed.  Many of those species died because they could not adapt.  Two of the species of ape-men were the Paranthropus boisei and the Homo habilis.  They both had different ways of life.  The boisei were gentle, and they were led by a leader whose strength and power kept the group together.  They were well adapted to the dry land.  Their diet was all vegetation.  Their jaws were very strong, so they could eat the toughest  vegetation.  They ate dried tubers and reed roots.  The habilis had a variety of skills.  They were scavengers, and they would try anything to survive.  They were active,  tough, alert, and noisy.  They did however, suffer during the near drought of the dry season, but they had something the boisei did not have.  They had brainpower.  The boisei were more brawn type.  The habilis learned to work together to scare other animals or enemies from food, and they know how to make basic stone tools.  The boisei ended up dying out while the habilis survived.  The habilis survived because they were able to use their brain power, and they were able to change according to the environment.  Unlike the habilis, the boisei did not change they were only able to eat vegetables, and they were not that smart.  When the plants died they died as well.  They were not willing to do whatever to survive.  The boisei were specialists while the habilis were generalists.  The habilists generalist trait is in us humans today.  We humans will do anything to survive.  We do not just depend mainly on one thing to survive.

One and a half million years ago a new ape-like species appeared in Southern Africa.  They were called Homo ergaster.  We are now starting to get our modern day looks, and we are starting to become more sophisticated.  The Homo ergaster had long, human-like noses.  These new noses cooled the air that was being breathed in.  The Homo ergaster had hairless bodies, millions of tiny sweat glands,  and a brain two thirds the size of our brain today.  The sweat glands made them stop panting to control temperature.  They now sweat to control their temperature.  They got better at making tools, and they made a stone hand axe.  They can now understand others because of their big brains.  They are no longer lead by a dominant male.  They live together and stay together as family and friends.  They are starting to lose their animal side.  They have stronger social bonds and a better understanding of the world, so they decide to leave Africa.  Over thousands of years they have spread all throughout the Middle East and Asia, where they are now known as Homo erectus.  They have not changed a bit after a million years.  They made no technological advancements, but they did learn how to control and work with fire as a weapon, tool, and for warmth towards the end of their existence.  They are now starting to evolve into modern day humans.

About a half a million years ago Homo heidelbergensis appear.  They are the last step before we humans exist.  They split up and then Neanderthals and Homo sapiens appeared.  The Neanderthals died out which caused the Homo sapiens to be the last ones surviving.  Homo sapiens are also known as modern humans.  We humans have been passed down many traits throughout the millions of years of evolving.  We are the most sophisticated and smartest species.  We can adapt to our environment by using our brains.  Many qualities separate us from other species.  For example, if we have a problem we can solve it.  We can make helpful tools to survive.  We can adapt quickly.  We can adapt to cold weather by simply wearing long sleeve shirts and a heavy jacket, and  we can adapt to warm weather by simply wearing lighter clothing.  We are also very civilized.  We live together, and care for eachother.  Those are some of the qualities we humans have that separate us from other species.  Those qualities are what make us human.

Alternative Energy Vs. Fossil Fuels

For years and years we humans have been using fossil fuels, energy that is from burning fossils, to power our machines.  All these years we have been slowly “poisoning” the Earth by using fossil fuels.  We are so oblivious to what is happening around us.  We are being blinded by our greed to gain power and money that we aren’t realizing that we are slowly killing the place that we live in.  Fossil fuels are one of the main causes of global warming, pollution, and climate change.  Also, it causes many dangers for all life forms.  Finally, I believe that fossil fuels are not reliable.  It’s not up to the Earth to save itself, it is up to us to save the Earth.  After all, the Earth doesn’t need us, we need the Earth.  Therefore, we should switch to cleaner alternative energy.

One of the main reasons why we should switch to clean alternative energy is because fossil fuels create a few of the world’s biggest problems.  These problems are pollution, global warming, and climate change.  Some people don’t think that fossil fuels are the cause of those three major problems and others do not believe that we have those three major problems.  Truth is fossil fuels create those three major problems.  For example, they release carbon dioxide which contributes to global warming.  Also, the carbon dioxide creates greenhouse gas in our atmosphere which causes climate change.  Finally, by burning fossil fuels you create even more carbon dioxide which creates pollution.  As you can tell fossil fuels create a lot of carbon dioxide which creates all of those three major problems.  We cannot afford to be making a surplus amount of carbon dioxide since there are more forests being killed.  There aren’t enough trees to clean the carbon dioxide which causes major problems.  Therefore, we should switch to clean alternative energy  because fossil fuels create a few of the world’s biggest problems.

Another one of the main reasons why we should switch to clean energy is because fossil fuels cause many dangers for all life forms.  For example, oil spills in the sea causes many marine wildlife to die or be severely injured or ill.  Back in 2010 there was a big oil spill called the Deepwater Horizon oil spill or the Gulf oil spill.  This oil spill harmed or killed over 114,065 different animals and affected thousands of miles worth of shoreline.  This oil spill is not fully cleaned up today and animals are still suffering from this catastrophe.  Another reason why fossil fuels cause danger for all life forms is that they are highly flammable.  A lot of fires caused start with oil which is a fossil fuel.  Finally, acquiring fossil fuels is extremely difficult and dangerous to get, and the job makes you vulnerable to health hazards in the future.  Therefore, we should switch to clean energy  because fossil fuels cause many dangers for all life forms.

The last main reason as to why I believe we should switch to cleaner alternative energy is because fossil fuel is not really reliable.  When you think of someone reliable that person does not cause problems with your life, right?  Many people rely on fossil fuels, but they do not realize that it causes them more problems.  For example, fossil fuels cause war.  You do not know it but there are many little wars that are happening because of fossil fuels.  Nations around the world pay to protect the land with fuel on it and sometimes wars happen because a group of people want that oil.  That brings me to my other point.  Fossil fuels change people by making them greedy.  Everyone always wants more oil, because more oil means more money, and more money means more power.  Finally, it is not reliable because it will run out.  This constant greed for fossil fuels will cause it to run out.  Unlike fossil fuels, alternative energy can be reused, and it is way cleaner.  Therefore,  I believe we should switch to cleaner alternative energy because fossil fuel is not really reliable.

We should start using more alternative energy.  We can use alternative energy the same way we use fossil fuels. It is less dangerous and harmful to life and the environment.  If we do not act today we may not have a tomorrow.  We cannot wait until the whole world gets chaotic to solve the problem, because it will be too late.  We as human beings must wake up.  The road to our solution may not be clear but we must push through and work together to get through this and ensure that future generations have a place to live in.  Remember, the Earth doesn’t need us, we need the Earth.  Therefore, we should switch to cleaner alternative energy.

Thank you so much for taking time to read my article! How do you feel about switching to alternative energy?

“Family Time”

By: John Limjoco

Family time…. Some people

don’t like it.

Some people love it.

No matter how much

time you spend with family.

Family time shows many things.

Remember

when you were a baby?

Remember

the time when you were hungry,

cold, hurt, sad, crying, or scared?

Who fed you? Who made you feel warmth?

Who healed you? Who cheered you up?

Who comforted you?  Who sat beside you with a box of tissues?

That was your family.

Your family has been

with you through thick

and thin.  By spending

some family time with your family

you can show how much

you appreciate

them.  You never know…

A new day for you can

mean the end of your loved

one’s life.
